Job Description
Data Center- LAN Engineer
Location: Stamford, CT - Onsite
Duration: 6 Months
Fully onsite
Key Responsibilities
- Datacenter Upgrade & LAN Switch Replacement : Lead the migration from legacy Cisco 6500 (access-distribution-core) and Nexus 7000 (FabricPath) architectures to a modern VXLAN-based leaf-spine fabric in two data centers, replacing outdated equipment and multicast switches.
- VXLAN/EVPN Fabric Implementation : Configure and deploy VXLAN EVPN fabrics using Cisco NDFC, provisioning networks, VLANs, VRFs, and L3Outs, while ensuring high availability, redundancy, and integration with external networks.
- Multicast Switch Replacement & Troubleshooting : Execute the replacement of multicast switches, troubleshoot complex multicast issues, and ensure smooth functionality for applications and hosts in the multicast environment.
- Network Configuration & Management : Utilize Cisco NX-OS and Nexus 9000 series platforms to configure and manage network fabrics, including NVE interfaces, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), and VXLAN components (VNI, VTEP).
- Troubleshooting & Operations : Diagnose and resolve Layer 2/3 and VXLAN-specific issues (e.g., MAC flaps, STP loops, VTEP reachability, BGP EVPN, multicast problems) using CLI, NDFC tools, and telemetry to monitor fabric health.
- Documentation & Change Management : Develop detailed implementation plans, rollback procedures, network diagrams, and configuration documentation, adhering to ITIL or organizational change control processes.
- Security & Segmentation : Implement VLAN segmentation, access control lists (ACLs), and VRF-based tenant separation to ensure secure and efficient network operations.
- Project Execution : Work independently to configure new hardware, prepare for network cutovers, and ensure minimal disruption during migrations, following design specifications.
- Long-Term Planning : Support future initiatives, including data center relocations and connecting new colocation facilities to existing data centers, ensuring scalability and design alignment.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Network Fundamentals : Deep understanding of Layer 2/3 networking concepts, including VLANs, trunking, STP, EtherChannel, IP addressing, subnetting, ARP, and MAC address learning.
- Routing & Protocols : Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), VRFs, and inter-VRF routing.
- VXLAN & EVPN Expertise : Strong knowledge of VXLAN fundamentals (VNI, VTEP, overlay/underlay) and EVPN as a control plane, including symmetric/asymmetric routing and L2/L3 VNI deployment.
- Cisco NDFC Proficiency : Hands-on experience with Cisco Nexus Dashboard Fabric Controller for creating and managing VXLAN EVPN fabrics, using Fabric Builder, templates, and fabric policies.
- Cisco NX-OS & Nexus Hardware : Expertise with Cisco Nexus 9000 series platforms and NX-OS CLI for fabric configuration, troubleshooting, and compliance management.
- Multicast Expertise : Proven ability to troubleshoot complex multicast issues and support multicast switch replacements, ensuring functionality for attached applications and hosts.
- Troubleshooting Skills : Ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues, including Layer 2/3, VXLAN, and multicast problems, using CLI, NDFC tools, and telemetry.
- Planning & Documentation : Strong skills in creating implementation plans, rollback procedures, network diagrams, and configuration documentation, with adherence to change management processes.
- Security Knowledge : Understanding of VLAN segmentation, ACLs, VRF-based tenant separation, and basic security principles in fabric environments.
